One of the biggest challenges in leaving a dangerously abusive situation is departing without being detected. There are MANY ways people can track others, and abusers will often use one or more of the following methods to keep track of their victims’ whereabouts…
Cell Phone Trackers

Magnetic Trackers (Easily attachable to vehicles in unsuspecting places)
Hiring Private Investigator(s)

Contacting Friends & Family for Latest Updates on Your Location & Vehicle
Following Your Social Media Location Check-Ins

Tracking Credit Card Purchases
STAYING SAFE WITHOUT YOUR CAR
If you are nervous about using one of your vehicles to escape your current situation, you probably have a good reason. More often than not, victims of domestic violence know their abuser better than anyone else, including their habits, temper limits and capabilities. Your instincts about their possible reaction are more than likely correct, and if you suspect your abuser will do anything and everything to keep you under their control, then they probably will.
Even if you have no solid proof you are being tracked via your vehicle (car, motorcycle, bike, skateboard, wheelchair, scooter, etc.), it can be beneficial to rent a vehicle.

NOTE!
Be Cautious About Who You Ask for Help!
While you may have many people in your life willing to help you leave your situation, YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL! Many of the people in your life probably know the person you are trying to get away from, and may not be able to keep you fully safe. Understanding abuse is difficult for those who have not experienced it themselves, so make sure any helpers are:
- Dependable & Reliable
- Can keep your confidence
- Can keep a secret
- Understand your situation fully
- Genuinely care about you (shown in actions, not just words)
If you have someone you can trust unequivocally and know that they can get you into a safer location, that’s awesome! But if you find yourself trying to escape without help, the best option is to rent a vehicle you can drive yourself. While Uber or LYFT may seem like a good idea, it is best to keep the number of people involved in your escape to a minimum. Renting a vehicle (such as a U-Haul truck, trailer or van) can be a great option.
NOTE: Make sure you are able to secure your credit card statement to hide your purchases if you cannot pay in cash.

Renting a U-Haul can be perfect for loading up your belongings and making an efficient get-away!
Check out this story about a singer who used U-Haul to escape from her abusive husband…

We know you’re scared. We know you’re second-guessing yourself. But that does NOT mean you are doing the wrong thing in leaving. Stay strong! You can do this, and remember that your safety and well-being come first before anyone or any relationship.
